Two Studies for the Kneeling St John in the 'Pitti Pietà', from the collection of Galleria Palatina, Florence.

After the frst two fgure sketches, in which the focus was on the posture of the kneeling St John, Fra Bartolommeo made this ‘clothed’ study in which he was concerned primarily with the realistic depiction of the folds of the cloak. Evidently he was not entirely satisfed with the shoulder at the frst attempt. He repeated the right shoulder and arm at top left so that he could work out the folds differently.
