Two Studies for Sts Francis and Dominic Embracing, and a Study for a Piece of Drapery in 'The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine', from the collection of Musée du Louvre, Paris, and for the Lunette Fresco in the Ospizio della Maddalena, Le Caldine.
To the right behind the Virgin Mary one can see two monks in an embrace in the background: Sts Francis and Dominic. St Dominic is reputed to have had a vision in which he and St Francis were presented to the Lord as the true defenders of the Christian faith. It was one of Fra Bartolommeo’s favourite themes, and this was not the first time he depicted it.
