Studies for St Peter with a Sketch of Two Saints in 'The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine', from the collection of Musée du Louvre, Paris.

Fra Bartolommeo made individual studies of all the figures in the composition. This is the preparatory study for St Peter, on the left in the painting. He points to the kneeling St Catherine. The two men behind Peter are also sketchily indicated. On the left the initial attempt at the figure of Peter was drawn without a head and arms, probably from a nude studio model. Below right there is a separate study of his hand with the two keys, for which sticks serve as substitutes.
