This detailed study was produced for an unrealized painting of Lady Justice,
recognizable from her raised sword. The way in which the robe is tied below
the bosom, with a striking fold that drapes off to the side, is virtually the
same as the robes of the Virgin Mary in the ‘Madonna della Misericordia’ and
it seems likely that Fra Bartolommeo used the pre-existing study.
