This is the composition study for the altarpiece that Fra Bartolommeo painted for Besançon cathedral. He was given the commission for this painting by the archdeacon Ferry Carondelet when he stayed in Florence on his way to Rome. The artist has included the kneeling figure of Carondelet as the donor lower right. The chapel-like interior in the painting is not indicated in the study because the artist first
concentrated on the overall composition and the figures’ postures.
