This composition is an apotheosis of Fra Bartolommeo’s fondness for child
angels who perform light tasks, thus evoking an optimistic and sentimental
atmosphere. The central figures are flanked by four young angels making
music and the baldachin is also supported by angels. Fra Bartolommeo
preferred this pose of the Madonna and Child, borrowed from Raphael’s
‘Madonna del Cardellino’ and employed it often.
