The painting for which Fra Bartolommeo produced this composition drawing
is not even known from documents, so perhaps it is a try-out. The visual
element of a baldachin carried by flying angels at the top of the composition
is probably derived from Raphael’s ‘Madonna del Baldacchino’, which was
intended for the Dei family chapel in the Santo Spirito church. Raphael left
this work incomplete when he left Florence for Rome in 1508.
