Composition Drawing for the 'Salvator Mundi' (Christ as Saviour of the World Surrounded by the Four Evangelists), the Center Panel of the 'Billi Altarpiece', from the collection of Galleria Palatina, Florence.

In 1515-1516 the rich Florentine merchant Salvatore Billi commissioned Fra Bartolommeo to paint three paintings for a chapel in the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata in Florence. The largest painting, now in the Galleria Palatina in Florence, shows Christ as Salvator Mundi (Saviour of the World). He stands on a pedestal flanked by the four Evangelists. Fra Bartolommeo made several drawings for this painting in which he explored the composition. Both sides of the sheet are covered with such composition drawings.[text: Albert Elen]
