On 17 February 1512, Jacopo Panciatichi commissioned Fra Bartolommeo to
paint a large panel for the high altar of San Domenico in Pistoia. The
contract specified that the Madonna and Child had to be portrayed with
Paul, John the Baptist, Sebastian and other saints. Eleven months later the
commission was withdrawn when the partnership of Fra Bartolommeo and
Albertinelli was finally dissolved. This composition drawing shows the
design.
