Three Studies for the Fleeing Princess in 'St George Slaying the Dragon' and a Study for a Hand in the 'Madonna del Santuario', from the collection of Cattedrale di San Martino, Lucca.
Fra Bartolommeo drew the Virgin’s right hand separately on this double-sided sheet with pre-existing studies for the lost painting of ‘Christ and the Woman of Samaria’ (1504–1505) and for the fleeing princess in the lost ‘St George Slaying the Dragon’, on which he was working at that time. The artist gave the page a quarter turn to the left to draw the hand in the empty upper section.
