Study for the Seated Virgin in the Upper Half (Lunette) of 'The Last Judgement', from the collection of Museo di San Marco, Florence.

The figure of the seated Virgin at the top left of ‘The Last Judgement’ was initially drawn in this black chalk study with vigorous parallel hatching. The seated figure is depicted with a strong incidence of light from the right, so the shadowing of the cloak on the opposite side is emphatically accentuated with black chalk. The face is proportionally small and nondescript.
