Study for the Seated Apostle at Innermost Right in the Upper Half (Lunette) of 'The Last Judgement', from the collection of Museo di San Marco, Florence.
The sixth apostle from the right in the fresco, whose position is equivalent to
that of the Virgin Mary for the symmetry, is the bearded St Paul and is fully
visible. The first thing to be drawn on this sheet was a small study, with
plenty of ‘pentimenti’. This was then developed in a larger study with the
hands crossed in front of the chest and the feet peeping out from under the
cloak.
