This drawing is a preparatory study for 'The Nativity', from the collection of Musée du Louvre, Paris.

A separate study was produced for the kneeling Mary on a sheet prepared

with yellow ochre, with heavy white highlights to capture the light on her

robes effectively. Now the figure is drawn in profile, which is adopted in the

painting. Similarly detailed figure and drapery studies must have been

produced for Joseph as well, but are unfortunately not extant.
