More information

This sheet contains studies for the figure of St John the Baptist in the altarpiece that Fra Bartolommeo painted for the cathedral of Besançon. The kneeling figure has a superimposed grid for transferring it to the canvas. The artist redrew parts of the figure to work out the facial expression and position of the hands in more detail.
