Study for a Mother and Two Children in the ‘Madonna della Misericordia’ in Lucca, and 'The Virgin and Christ-Child with Saint Elisabeth and the Infant Saint John' (Lady Cook Madonna).

This is one of several preliminary studies for the altarpiece with the 'Madonna della Misericordia' that Fra Bartolommeo painted around 1515. It is a study for the group shown in the foreground bottom right in the altarpiece. It is likely that a mother and her two children posed for the artist. The two hands are detailed studies for the figure of an old woman, missing here, who stands behind this group in the painting.
