Study for the Head of the Christ-Child in the 'Madonna del Santuario', from the collection of Cattedrale di San Martino, Lucca.

Here the head of the Christ Child is developed separately. It may have the

features of a baby’s head, but it looks somewhat elderly. It was used in the

painting without any notable changes, with the mouth open, as was also the

case with the lute-playing angel at the bottom.
