More information

This late mediaeval bronze jug was used during the meal for washing hands. The matching copper wash basin has unfortunately not been preserved with the jug. The design of this jug, which was possibly made in France, shows the influence of important Islamic utensils from the period. These were mainly produced in Damascus in Syria for the European market and made in a 'Veneto-Saracen' style. These luxury utensils were much favoured by Europeans and spread to the north via Venice and were copied by local coppersmiths.
