This drawing shows a fantasised Italian park. The statue of Bacchus in the lower left could have been inspired by a sculpture in the garden of Villa d'Este in Tivoli, near Rome. Indeed, the Amsterdam artist Isaac de Moucheron stayed in Rome and Bologna for his artist training from 1694-1697.
As a result of the use of colour, the drawing takes on the appearance of a miniature painting. Moucheron made such drawings for the market. Since the early eighteenth century, Italian landscapes and park scenes were highly prized by Dutch art lovers and connoisseurs.
