This drawing is regarded as a youthful self-portrait of Van Hoogstraten on the basis of the similarity to painted self-portraits like the one in the Hermitage, St Petersburg (ca. 1647). He probably drew it while he was apprenticed to Rembrandt. Samuel looks straight at the viewer, so we may assume that he used a mirror.
