From the inscription on the verso - ‘two West Indian birds, life size’ -
we can infer that people at the time were not familiar with the
origins of certain exotic species. Most of Schouman’s drawings in
this exhibition have annotations like this, often repetitions in pencil
of inscriptions in brown ink that have been partly cut off, but it is not
clear whether they were written by the artist himself. They could
also have been added later by a collector.
