An inscription on the verso tells us that the bird is shown life size
and that the drawing came from the collection of Martin Hulle (1735-
1796), formerly a representative of the Dutch East India Company
in Canton (1758-1767), who settled in The Hague on his return to
the Netherlands. He brought a collection of ‘Chinese curiosities’
back with him. This pheasant had a very local range in Southeast
Asia and Sumatra.
