The metamorphosis in this portrait of two friends seems to be inspired by a poem by Heinrich Heine about the impossible love between a beetle and a fly. Here Ensor has become a beetle. The dragonfly resembles Mariëtte Rousseau-Hannon, whose house acted as a meeting place for artists and scholars. Ensor was enchanted by this beautiful biologist.
