  • Anca Szilagyi asked

I'm looking for information about the crab and tortoise sculptures cast from actual animals that you have on display, from about 1500-25. Do you have more information about those pieces and how common they were?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Anca, these are the only two that we have. But there are many, all the large museums with a bronze collection have them, like the V&A, Berlin, Washington. There's a short mentioning in our bronze catalogue (see no.8). Our head librarian sent me a list of literature on bronzes, I will send it to you via email. Hopefully this helps. All the best, Friso Lammertse

  • Anne Bergvelt asked

Is Eriphia Spinifrons caught in the Netherlands and if not, where is it caught?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Anne, The Eriphia spinifrons is also known under the name Eriphia verrucosa. This species of crab can be found in the Black Sea, the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, including the Adriatic coast. It was meticulously studied by the artist, to judge by the attention he devoted to the colourful spots on the carpace and the characteristic horny protuberances on the front. It is highly likely that Dürer made this drawing during his first trip to Venice, where he resided from 1494-95 (and later on in 1505 and 1507). Kind regards,
    Tanja van Oostrum
