The image on the coat of arms is unusual. It shows a boy leaning on a tiled stove. The inscription reads ‘Hitze oho’ (ah, warmth). Naturalistic leaves on the left and stylized acanthus leaves on the right act as mantling for the helmet. It is not certain whether this was a design for a family coat of arms. It may refer to a passage in Sebastian Brant’s ‘Das Narrenschiff’ (The Ship of Fools) (1494), for which Dürer supplied woodcuts as illustrations.
