Most of Rembrandt’s etched self-portraits date from his early period. Here he has pictured himself as he draws or etches. Beside him sits his wife Saskia van Uylenburgh, whom he had married two years earlier. The couple are portrayed in 16th-century costume, not contemporary dress.
