Withoos was the son of the celebrated Matthias Withoos, a painter
of fowers, insects and reptiles. His brother Frans and sister Alida
also learned the trade from their father. Pieter signed his drawing
lower right and noted on the verso the bird species he had drawn:
‘Linnet’, ‘bullfnch’ and ‘starling’. The bird at top left looks nothing
like a linnet (Carduelis cannabina); it is in fact a twite, a winter guest
from Northern Europe.
