Jan Brueghel the Elder, known as ‘the Velvet Brueghel’, was the youngest son of the famous painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder (his surname is spelled slightly differently). Pieter Bruegel had a great influence on the development of both the panoramic landscape and the enclosed wooded scene with the focus on trees in the foreground. This influence is readily apparent in this drawing by his son, who probably based it upon examples from his father’s estate.
