  • Iseut de Kernier asked

Hello, I've seen you have medieval badges. Do you have ones coming from and/or linked to John the Baptist shrines such as Amiens cathedral or Saint-Jean-d'Angély Abbey? Thank you very much,
    Iseut

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Iseut, we have a small collection of medieval badges, but not the ones you mention. You could consider contacting Stichting Middeleeuwse Religieuze en Profane Insignes, see http://www.medievalbadges.org/. Furthermore, Radboud University Nijmegen has a research website on Medieval bades that include many Dutch finds: https://www.kunera.nl/default.aspx?From=Kunerapage. All the best and good luck with your search, Alexandra van Dongen, curator of pre-industrial design

More information

Pilgrim badges were produced and sold in huge numbers from the 12th to the 16th century. Everyone who made a pilgrimage acquired one. It is apparent that these small mementos were cast in moulds. The badges provide information about people’s lives and travel in the late Middle Ages, a period long before the invention of printing.
