Rembrandt regularly drew outdoors in and around Amsterdam. This is the only known drawing for which he used oiled charcoal. At this time Amsterdam still had city walls with triangular fortifications. On each of these stood a windmill and a few houses and sheds. The fortification shown here stood roughly where nowadays the train enters the city on the northwest. In the background we can see the River IJ.
