This chalk study depicts a seated woman with a
partially exposed upper body, with Rembrandt adding white chalk in places to
highlight light and form. He likely drew the woman from a life model in his
studio. On the verso of the drawing, a woman is shown from behind, her hair
tied in the same manner, presumably the same model.
