The Film and Video Collection through the Eyes of Rosa Barba

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has invited visual artist and filmmaker Rosa Barba to delve into the film and video collection and present her reflections in Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen.

The Collection through the Eyes of

Rosa Barbas exploration of the museum’s collection began with a search for the essence of the medium of film. The first film she has selected is The Tenant (2010) by Rivane Neuenschwander and Cao Guimarães. The film employs subtle camera work to follow a soap bubble floating endlessly through an abandoned house in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The house shows signs of age, but the delicate bubble remains intact.

Drawing Probable Conclusions

In Drawing Probable Conclusions, Barba presented the work of other artists who also engage with the different aspects of film. In addition to works from the collection by Fiona Tan, Miguel-Ángel Cárdenas, Anna, Deimantes Narkevicius and Rivane Neuenschwander, she has also selected works that she believes the museum should acquire, such as Strikes at Time (2011) by Raqs Media Collective, and works by Joan Jonas, Jimmy Robert and Wendelien van Oldenborgh.

VOICE ENGINE & Hear, There Where the Echoes Are

In the final phase, VOICE ENGINE & Hear, There Where the Echoes Are, Barba creates a cinematic space that includes sound, light and movement. In this space she presented her performances VOICE ENGINE (2021-24) and Hear, There Where the Echoes Are (2016-24).

Barba takes the components of cinema apart, giving each element a position in space and then starts playing with them. Designed as a promenade through the gallery, teeming with memories, the work offers a sensory experience that is further reinforced and enlivened with sound recordings of the vocal and musical performances.

Barba’s multidisciplinary performances took place on February 1, 3 and 4. The film exhibition is on view up to and including Sunday March 3.
