Visiting the depot

Ina Klaassen, Director of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, explains what visitors will be able to do in the depot.

Individual tour

Visitors to the depot can enjoy two sorts of tours. They can make their own way around the building or take a guided tour. Much of the building is accessible to individuals, who among other things can look at the items from the collection in the display cases in the Atrium. You can also see into the depots through the glass walls. It is not an art historical exhibition as such, but rather a way to express the collection’s substance, magnitude and diversity. The items on show are changed from time to time. There are also three gallery spaces with displays of works in the collection that change more often than the displays in the Atrium. To help visitors navigate through the immense number of artworks, we are planning to develop supporting media – possibly a mobile app – that provide in-depth information.

Guided tour

Guided tour

On a guided tour visitors can also see the climate controlled storage facilities, where the humidity and temperature are kept constant. There are five different climate controlled repositories, one each for paintings, for metals, for organic and inorganic materials, for black-and-white photography and for colour photography. Guided tours are intended for groups of up to thirteen people, who can visit a repository for no more than approximately ten minutes otherwise the climate is disrupted too much. During a tour the interior climate is affected by the heat generated by visitors and the moisture they breathe out. It takes some time for the interior climate to be restored to stable conditions after a visit. Our planning department assigns the accessible depots.

Behind the scenes

Behind the scenes

In the depot you can also literally take a look behind the scenes. Visitors can see things that normally speaking are not on view in museums. Visitors can be given a tour of the depot’s building services areas, where they can look at the air conditioning units and climate control systems. Or the art handling rooms, where we produce made-to-measure climate crates for works of art that are transported to other countries. We give visitors an understanding of what goes on behind the closed doors of a museum and they can see for themselves the very substantial amount of effort, love and attention we devote to the works in our collection.

Conservation workshops

Conservation workshops

Visitors can see to the conservation workshops through large windows. The guide provides the memebers of the group with information about the conservation process and use interactive screens to learn more about conservation work and the people that do the work.

On the roof there is a nearly 360-degree view over Rotterdam from a wonderful height of 35 metres. From this height you can really enjoy the sight of the city but without losing contact with ground level when you look down. You remain connected to the city.

On the roof there is a restaurant for visitors to enjoy. Design consultants Concrete have devised a fantastic concept for it. The scope and diversity of our art collection are reflected in the restaurant concept: a collection of restaurants. There are all sorts of ways to enjoy food in the same space. You can eat in an informal brasserie setting, at the Chef’s Table. People can enjoy the restaurant all day long, from Tuesday through Sunday for coffee or tea, lunch, and drinks, from Wednesday through Saturday for dinner.
