Pier Francecso Mola was born in Coldrerio, present-day Ticino in Switzerland. When he was four years old he moved with his father to Rome, where he would spend almost all the rest of his life. In Rome he had lessons from Cavaliere d'Arpino and then from Franscecso Albani in Bologna, where Mola also spent several years. The landscape plays an important role in Mola's works. Compared to the classicism that held sway at the time, his style was considerably freer.
