Wijnand Nuijen

Den Haag 1813 - Den Haag 1839

Wijnand Jan Joseph Nuyen became a pupil of painter Andreas Schelfhout in The Hague when he was only twelve. Between 1825 and 1829 he studied at the Drawing Academy in The Hague. Nuyen specialised in landscapes and cityscapes. His favourite subjects were the landscapes of Normandy and the northern French coast.
In 1829 he received a prize from the Felix Meritas society in Amsterdam for a water colour of a wooded landscape. In 1836 he was admitted to the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. Just a year before his death, he married Schelfhout's daughter.
