Willem Roelofs

Amsterdam 1822 - Berchem 1897

Willem Roelofs began drawing and painting at an early age. He painted his earliest known landscape when he was 15 years old. Roelofs grew up in Utrecht and received lessons there from the artist Abraham Hendrik Winter. In 1850 he travelled to France and visited Barbizon and Fontainebleau. Roelofs became one of the most important artists of the Hague School. His best-known pupils were P. Gabriël and J.H. Weissenbruch.
