Pieter Saenredam is a Haarlem painted who specialised in Dutch church interiors. His paintings are characterised by his cool use of colour and the strict, almost mathematical spaciousness. Before he started painting, he made detailed sketches, often accompanied with measurements and perspective construction drawings. Sometimes he would keep these drawings for years on end before he finally set about the painting.
