Andreas Schelfhout was originally trained as gilder and framemaker. Between 1811 and 1814 he studied with the decorative painter Joannes Breckenheijmer. Andreas Schelfhout painted primarily landscapes and from 1820 on narrative genre pieces. In his later work, Schelfhout had the human figures in his work painted in by other artists who were specialised in this, such as Joseph Moerenhout and Pieter van Os. Schelfhout was the teacher of Wijnand Nuyen and Johan Barthold Jongkind.
