Hendrik Maertensz. Sorgh was a pupil of, successively, David Teniers the younger and Willem Buytewech. Sorgh primarily specialised in peasant interiors and market scenes. In 1636 or 1637 he became a master in the St Luke guild in Rotterdam and in 1669 even became its leader.
