Paolo Veronese was specialised in large biblical, allegorical and historical scenes. Veronese's choice of subject allowed him to fill his paintings with countless figures and animals. The freedom he allowed himself sometimes got him into difficulty. One work, which was known as the Last Supper, contained, according to the church court, too many examples of daily life for such a subject. After an interrogation, Veronese decided to change the subject of the work to the Meal in the house of Levi.
