Warhol was trained as a graphic designer at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. In 1949 he settled in New York where he worked as an advertising art director. In 1962 he made his debut as an artist with an exhibition of silk screen prints of dollar bills, Campbell soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles. In this period he opened 'The Factory', a studio in a factory building where several people manufactured Warhol's art. The studio also acted as a meeting place for the New York underground scene. Apart from the production of Warhol's films, photography sessions and silk-screen prints, the magazine 'Interview' and the rock band 'Velvet Underground' were also founded here.
