During his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in his native Copenhagen, Christiansen began to explore music as a form of architecture: making music is building something in space and then breaking it down again. He joined DUT, an association of young composers, where he met Nam June Paik, and EKs-skolen, a radical platform for artists from different disciplines. In the course of the 1960s, he explicitly turned against the modernist serial music of well-known composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez. Christiansen met Beuys in 1964 and composed experimental soundscapes for several of Beuys’s actions.
