Adriaen Brouwer was born in Flanders, but spent some time in the Netherlands and was probably a pupil of Frans Hals. In 1631, Brouwer returned to Flanders and became a member of the guild of Antwerp. Brouwer's work is considered a link between Flemish and Dutch genre painting. Most paintings show peasants in an inn interior. His works can be compared to that of Jan Steen and David Teniers II, who were influenced by him.
