Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem was a pupil of Pieter Pietersz, the son of Pieter Aertsen, and is considered one of the most deliberately mannerist painters in the Northern Netherlands. He was born in Haarlem in 1562. After studying in Antwerp, he returned to his city of birth in 1581, where he produced a shooting association piece in 1583. He produced more large-sized paintings, including scenes from the Bible and mythology. His work is characterised by nude figures in all sorts of complicated stances.
