Wassily Kandinsky

Moskou 1866 - Neuilly-sur-Seine 1944

Wassily Kandinsky was of Russian origin, but lived in Munich before the First World War, where he was a member of the artist group Der Blaue Reiter. He is regarded as one of the founders of abstract art.
Together with fellow Blaue Reiter painter Franz Marc, he described music as 'the most abstract of all arts'. Music had, after all, never allowed itself to be diverted into imitating reality. Music was an expression of the 'inner sound' he also sought in painting.
Between 1914 and 1921, Kandinsky lived in Russia. From 1922 he taught in Germany in the Bauhaus. He left Germany in 1933 and settled in France.
