Timmer was another idiosyncratic loner who quietly continued to make figurative art amidst the violent abstraction of the 1950s and later. He occasionally painted people but his favourite subjects were animals. He was a master in capturing the characteristic movements and habits of the most diverse animal species. And man is indirectly present, for he captures, domesticates and kills animals. Timmer had a keen eye for the behaviour of animals in captivity.
