More information

This is a study for the figure setting down a chest full of gifts shown at lower right in the painting ‘The Adoration of the Magi’ painted by Rubens for the Council Chamber in Antwerp’s City Hall. Rubens followed a fixed procedure in preparing his paintings. First he drew a schematic compositional study, then an oil sketch and finally various drawn studies for individual figures and other elements. Rubens used all these materials as the basis for the actual painting, which he made with the assistance of pupils and studio assistants.
