This painting shows the vision that St Teresa of Avila describes in her autobiography. On the eve of Pentecost 1569 the Holy Spirit appeared to her in the form of a brilliant dove with wings like mother-of-pearl. Teresa, wearing the habit of the Carmelite order, kneels with her hands held out in ecstasy, transfixed by the dove.
