In this work, Ruisdael attempted to depict the ambiance of the Dutch landscape: low, flat and wet. The heavy cloudy sky and the deep shadow parties of the trees in the water are very characteristic for Jacob van Ruisdael. The branches stand out clearly against the sky. The panel has a monogram. Its form suggests that it is relatively early. The painting must therefore be considered an early work by Ruisdael, dating from the period around 1650.
