This work, dated 1641, is a characteristic example of Salomon van Ruysdael's early period. Although the profile of Deventer is topographically correct, one must assume that the rest of the landscape is based on fantasy. It is comparable to the painting with the view of the Pellekussen Gate in Utrecht, which is part of the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen . This gate is shown located on the water, which is not the case in reality.
