This painting gives a good idea of the kind of work that Corot produced on a larger scale with such success. He was concerned less about an accurate depiction of a specific spot than about a mood, about nature as a place where the supernatural could also reveal itself. Sometimes he lets wood nymphs dance in his landscapes, but here there is just a horseman.
